Julian Brandt has decided to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of his expiring contract and will be on the radar of several sides for a quality Bosman addition, including some Serie A powerhouses, especially Inter.
According to Sky Sport Deutschland (via Calciomercato), the attacker will try a new experience after a long stay with his present team, which he joined in 2019 from Bayer Leverkusen in a €25M move. He has racked up 298 appearances since, scoring 56 goals and dishing out 69 assists. He has 48 caps with Germany under his belt. The 29-year-old is in the midst of another productive campaign, having hit the net 10 times and logged 3 helpers in 32 games across all competitions.
Director Lars Ricker and coach Niko Kovac confirmed that Brandt will head elsewhere, as they were unable to reach an agreement on a new contract. The versatile forward will be able to choose among several destinations.
The Premier League is top of the list, as few sides can afford his salary. He’s been making €7M annually and will likely seek a richer payday. He won’t have many alternatives if he opted to stay in Germany. Serie A is a more distant option. He could also leave Europe altogether and head to the MLS or to more exotic leagues.
The free agent pool is starting to become very enticing. It’s noteworthy that more and more players are transferring in this manner, which used to be sporadic a few years ago. One has to wonder whether Italian teams are really in the mix, though. Most are, or are planning to become, diligent with their wage bill.
