CELTIC…1(Oxlade-Chamberlain 15)
ST MIRREN…0
Celtic secured another vital three points with a 1-0 home win over St Mirren, courtesy of a first-half goal from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
It was a tough and, at times, nervy, game at Paradise, but Martin O’Neill’s side saw out the match successfully to move second in the Premiership table.
Celtic started the match brightly and Callum McGregor had an early shot from outside the area saved by Shamal George, with Oxlade-Chamberlain firing home the rebound, but the English internationalist was flagged for offside.
However, on 15 minutes, he opened the scoring with a low left-foot shot inside the area after the ball broke to him, and this time there was to be no offside flag raised.
It was a good start for Celtic, who were enjoying the bulk of possession and taking the game to St Mirren.
Just before the half-hour mark, the Hoops carved out another good opening, with a ball lifted over the top of the St Mirren defence for Daizen Maeda to run on to.
His ball into the six-yard box was meant for Tomas Cvancara, but Shamal George made a brave save, injuring himself in the process and forcing the visitors to bring on their substitute keeper, Ryan Mullen.
And Mullen made a good save with 10 minutes remaining to deny Cvancara from close-range, with the keeper also denying Nygren soon after with another save.
The second-half was at times tense and nervous as St Mirren enjoyed much more possession, though without creating any clear-cut chances to test Viljami Sinisalo.
The Paisley side did chalk up a number of corners early in the second-half but the Hoops dealt well with the set-piece danger.
Indeed, Celtic’s best opportunity after the break was a near post chance from Kelechi Iheanacho in the 72nd minute, who connected with a Daizen Maeda cross but couldn’t steer the ball on target.
However, the Hoops did manage to see out the game to take all three points.
There are five league games remaining in the campaign, though before they play host to Falkirk in a fortnight’s time, Celtic will head to Hampden next Sunday to take on St Mirren in the Scottish Cup semi-final.
