Atlético de Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios was forced off injured in minute 48 of the Copa del Rey quarter-final against Real Betis at La Cartuja on Thursday.
According to Superdeporte, he felt a sharp pain in the back of his right thigh while accelerating down the flank, left the pitch hobbling and was replaced by José María Giménez with Atlético already in control.
He has muscular discomfort and will undergo tests in the coming days to determine the extent. Early medical impressions are not positive and point to a hamstring issue, which could mean weeks out if confirmed.
Head coach Diego Simeone acknowledged the academy graduate’s importance in midfield, noting the replacements impressed and the squad has depth to cope despite absences.
The potential setback complicates Atlético’s packed schedule after reaching the Copa semi-finals. They also face key LaLiga fixtures and are due to start their Champions League round of 32 against Brujas from 18 February 2026.
He had carried an issue from the recent league meeting with Levante, when he was withdrawn as a precaution with an overload. It is the third time this season he has suffered muscular problems, heightening concern as Atlético rotate through February dates with Betis, Rayo Vallecano, Espanyol and Oviedo.
