Botafogo-SP and Palmeiras meet on Sunday in Ribeirão Preto in Paulistão’s sixth round, with a 12-year hoodoo at stake. The Tricolor’s last win over the Verdão came in 2014.
That victory was 3-1 in the 10th round against Gilson Kleina’s team, with Camilo, Marcelo Macedo and Mike scoring and Jorge Valdívia replying. Globo.com also looks back at what 2014 was like.
Since then Palmeiras have nine wins and two draws in this fixture. In 2014, Botafogo-SP fell in the quarter-finals to Ituano, who later eliminated Palmeiras in the semis and beat Santos to lift the title. Bota finished as Copa Paulista runners-up to Santo André.
Palmeiras scraped survival in the 2014 Brasileiro, 16th on 40 points, two ahead of Vitória, staying up thanks to Santos on the final day. They exited the Copa do Brasil in the last 16 to Atlético-MG.
Brazil was preparing to host a second World Cup. Ribeirão Preto hosted France, Germany lifted a fourth crown by beating Argentina, and Brazil suffered the 7-1 semi-final against the eventual champions. Felipão began the year in charge, then Dunga returned.
Cristiano Ronaldo won FIFA’s top prize for the third time, Sochi staged the Winter Olympics, and Gabriel Medina became Brazil’s first surfing world champion. Orkut closed, Facebook bought WhatsApp, the Senate approved the Marco Civil, and 12 Years a Slave and Frozen topped the Oscars.
