Pany Varela left out of Portugal futsal squad to face Japan

Jorge Braz has named his Portugal futsal squad for two friendlies against Japan, with Benfica’s Pany Varela omitted.
According to Glorioso 1904, Benfica supply four players, André Coelho, Silvestre Ferreira, Kutchy and Carlos Monteiro. Compared with the Euro finals group, Afonso Jesus and Lúcio Rocha are also absent.
The squad will assemble on Sunday 5 April at the Cidade do Futebol in Oeiras, staying until Tuesday. They will train in Coimbra on Wednesday and remain there until Saturday, the day of the second match.
Portugal face Japan on Thursday 9 April at 20:00 and Saturday 11 April at 19:00, both at the Pavilhão Multidesportos Dr. Mário Mexia in Coimbra. The national side last played there in 2023 against Finland in qualifying for the 2024 World Cup.
In 2024/25, Pany Varela has made 28 appearances for Benfica, 16 in the league, seven in the Champions League, four in the League Cup and one in the Super Cup. The 37-year-old has scored 13 goals.
