We’re switching things up in our feature on potential World Cup unsung heroes, focusing on Paraguay by spotlighting the manager, Gustavo Alfaro.

When the United States men’s national team takes the field against Paraguay on June 12 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the biggest threat to the Americans might not even be on the pitch. Paraguay manager Gustavo Alfaro has done an outstanding job turning his team around during CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying, going nine matches unbeaten to push La Albirroja back into contention to ultimately secure a World Cup berth.

Along the way, Paraguay returned to its identity as a stingy, defensively sound, and pragmatic side, picking up major wins against Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. In recent friendlies, results have been mixed as Alfaro has experimented with different setups, but over time, the pragmatic 4-2-3-1 has delivered his most consistent results.

Under Alfaro, Paraguay has gone from background noise to a genuine problem for anyone on the schedule. He tightened the defense, restored that traditional edge and bite, and suddenly the team wasn’t just competing, it was taking points off heavyweights in South America.

This is now a disciplined, gritty side that’s difficult to break down, with players like Miguel Almirón and Antonio Sanabria stepping up in key moments. Just as importantly, Alfaro has shown an ability to break down opponents tactically, which could pose a serious problem for a USMNT side that has historically struggled against organized defenses.

Gustavo Alfaro: A Tactician’s Coach

There’s nothing flashy about Alfaro, and that’s exactly the point. In an era obsessed with aesthetics and possession for possession’s sake, he has built a reputation on clarity over complexity and results over style. His teams are less concerned with entertainment value than they are competing, disrupting, and grinding out results.

Alfaro’s are fully aware of their limitations. You’ll rarely see them overcommit or get stretched out, and they typically won’t beat themselves. He’s installed a system rooted in control and efficiency, with each phase of play serving a specific purpose.

This makes Paraguay especially dangerous against stronger opponents. They absorb pressure and stay organized, striking when the opportunity arises.

Still, labeling Alfaro as purely defensive would miss the bigger picture. His greatest strength is adaptability. He can make adjustments either before or during matches, and he can tailor his game plans to exploit weaknesses and neutralize threats. That pragmatism, combined with strong man management, allows him to quickly build trust within the squad and get full buy in from his players.

His track record reflects that identity. At Arsenal de Sarandí, he delivered one of the most unlikely league titles in Argentine football history in 2012. With Boca Juniors, he kept the team competitive in continental play, reaching the latter stages of the Copa Libertadores, and winning two titles. Internationally, he guided Ecuador to the 2022 World Cup with a young, disciplined squad that came close to advancing to the knockout rounds.

Could Paraguay Knock Off the USMNT?

The Paraguay-USMNT matchup will be one of the most anticipated group stage games, as it also happens to be the opening match on U.S. soil.

The two teams squared off last November, and Alfaro kept things relatively simple, deploying a two-striker 4-4-2 setup. It nearly paid off, with the United States earning a narrow 2–1 win in what proved to be a highly competitive and challenging match.

For the World Cup opener, expect the 63-year-old manager to shift toward a more conservative shape, likely using a single striker with a packed midfield. Alfaro will be encouraged by the return of Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Diego Gómez, who is expected to be fit and included in the World Cup squad.

One of Alfaro’s main challenges will be settling on a consistent option up front, with Álex Arce, Antonio Sanabria, and Julio Enciso all in the mix. There’s also the question of rediscovering the best version of Almirón, who has struggled for impact since his return to MLS and Atlanta United.

Defensively, though, Paraguay remains one of the most solid teams around. In Alfaro’s 18 matches in charge, eight have been clean sheets, and the team has yet to concede more than two goals in a single game. Led by Gustavo Gómez, Juan Cáceres, and Omar Alderete, the back line is organized, physical, and difficult to break down.

For the United States, the World Cup opener against Paraguay is shaping up to be anything but straightforward. With Alfaro on the touchline, Paraguay brings a disciplined, defense-first approach that tends to disrupt teams like the U.S. that rely on tempo and space.

This is the type of match where patience and decision-making matter more than flair, because Paraguay will sit compact, limit passing lanes, and wait for mistakes. If the U.S. gets impatient or sloppy in possession, they risk playing right into Paraguay’s hands, especially on counters and set pieces.

Ultimately, this opener isn’t just about talent. It’s about whether the USMNT can stay composed, solve a well-drilled defensive block, and avoid turning the game into the kind of grind Alfaro’s teams are built to win.
