Milan don’t have much hope that they will be able to come to terms with Mike Maignan and keep him past this season, as the expiration of his contract is looming, and have shortlisted Zion Suzuki and Elia Caprile as possible replacements, Calciomercato reports.
New director Igli Tare will make an attempt, but the shot-stopper might have already decided to leave. Chelsea lodged a €15M bid early in the summer, the Rossoneri asked for more, and the negotiation stopped.
Milan already eyed Suzuki while the talks with the Blues were ongoing, while they have been monitoring Caprile since he left Napoli. However, Parma never opened to the sale of Japanese international in the recent window. They paid €10M to acquire him from Saint-Truiden in 2024.
Cagliari redeemed the Italian goalie for €8M after a positive six-month spell. He had bloomed at Bari and Empoli. He recorded four appearances with the Partenopei while serving as Alex Meret’s deputy.
It’s too early to give up for Maignan. They should have pulled the plug during the summer if they had no shot whatsoever. It’s a pivotal season for the Parma star, who was up-and-down for a couple of months after coming in, but then showed up consistently once his side improved defensively. The jury is still out on whether he’s on his way to being truly superb or if he’s just really flashy. The Cagliari man is highly reliable. Both have the right age to make the jump to a top team, but, if Massimiliano Allegri is calling the shots, they might bring in a veteran they are completely comfortable with.
