Sheffield United leaned on a Leeds United thread to finish their January business, with Kalvin Phillips joining on loan to become the fifth ex-Whites alongside Jamie Shackleton, Patrick Bamford, Joe Rothwell and Leo Hjelde at Bramall Lane. The midfielder says the move is about avoiding his career 'fizzling out'.
"Funnily enough it was early December, I was thinking about going out on loan and Pat text me and said Chris [Wilder] has asked me to message and see what you think about coming here to play a few games. At first I was like 'I don't know' but the more I thought about it, I thought 'why not?'" He told Sky Sports.
Phillips and Bamford were central to Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds, winning the Championship then finishing top 10 in the Premier League. Both earned England caps. Phillips’ move to Manchester City brought limited minutes, loans to West Ham and Ipswich, and an achilles problem earlier this season.
He came off the bench in his second Championship game after signing, a quick free-kick sparking the move for Gus Hamer to feed Bamford in a 2-1 defeat by Middlesbrough. He then started the next match and played 90 minutes before being withdrawn.
"So many players have stayed at a club for so long, not played and their career has fizzled out. I didn't want that to happen and I felt like I've still got some life in me, some football to play and I'm looking forward to the next three or four years."
