Gorst Warns Liverpool Over Centre Back Gamble as Jacquet Steps Into Spotlight

Liverpool’s summer transfer plans continue to attract scrutiny, and one position remains firmly under the microscope.

The departure of Ibrahima Konate has left a significant hole in Liverpool’s defensive structure. While the arrival of Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes provides excitement and promise, there is a growing feeling that relying solely on youth could prove a dangerous strategy over the course of a demanding season.

That concern has now been echoed by respected Liverpool journalist Paul Gorst, who believes the club should be doing more to strengthen at centre back.

Konate Exit Changes Defensive Landscape

Konate’s departure as a free agent marks the end of a five year spell at Anfield.

For long periods, the Frenchman formed a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk and helped provide stability in Liverpool’s back line. Losing a player of that calibre without a direct replacement naturally raises questions.

Liverpool have moved to address part of that issue by bringing in Jacquet, one of France’s most highly rated young defenders. Giovanni Leoni also remains highly regarded despite enduring a frustrating spell on the sidelines through injury.

However, neither player has yet proven himself in the Premier League.

That uncertainty is at the heart of the debate.

Gorst Makes Feelings Clear

Speaking in a Liverpool Echo Q&A, Gorst was asked why Liverpool appear reluctant to actively pursue another centre back this summer.

His response left little room for ambiguity.

‘I agree. I think Liverpool are taking a huge risk if they opt not to actively replace Ibrahima Konate, who becomes a free agent from July 1.

‘The plan, according to the conversations I’ve had, is for Jacquet and Leoni to both be given chances, but I suspect the club will remain poised to act if they feel a more senior defender is available at a reasonable price.

‘That leaves the club at the mercy of market developments, however. I’d rather see them proactively and aggressively target a first-choice centre-half this summer.’

Those comments will resonate with many supporters who believe Liverpool are one injury away from facing a genuine shortage of experienced central defenders.

Questions Around Depth Remain

On paper, Liverpool have sufficient numbers.

Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Jacquet and Leoni provide four senior options for two positions. Yet football seasons are rarely decided on paper.

Gomez has suffered his share of injury setbacks in recent years. Jacquet is adapting to a new league and a new environment. Leoni is attempting to rebuild momentum after a serious ACL injury that sidelined him for almost a year.

Each situation carries uncertainty.

Liverpool’s recruitment team will naturally have confidence in the young players coming through. Giving opportunities to emerging talent remains an important part of long term planning.

Transfer Decision Could Define Summer

Liverpool are expected to prioritise several areas of the squad before the transfer window closes. A new winger appears high on the agenda, while other positions may also require attention.

Yet centre back remains a compelling discussion.

No club should spend recklessly, and there is merit in waiting for the right opportunity rather than overpaying. Equally, there is danger in assuming everything will fall into place.

Gorst’s argument is straightforward. Liverpool should not leave themselves exposed when there is a clear opening to add quality, experience and a potential long term successor to Van Dijk.

As the summer progresses, that decision could become one of the most important of Liverpool’s transfer window.
