Paul Merson has claimed Enzo Maresca will be sacked if Chelsea don’t beat Southampton and Leicester in their next two league games.

Maresca replaced Mauricio Pochettino last summer after guiding Leicester City to the Championship title, and signed a five year deal at Stamford Bridge.

The 45-year-old made a brilliant start to life in west London, and Chelsea found themselves in the title conversation around Christmas, with the Blues second in the league.

However, Chelsea have tumbled down the table to seventh following a run of two wins in their last ten league games, although Maresca has insisted he believes in his ideas more than ever.

Despite this the Blues are somehow only a point behind Manchester City in fourth, and have two very favourable fixtures up next.

Chelsea host the Premier League’s bottom two clubs Southampton and Leicester, and they won’t have a better chance to get back to winning ways.

In theory those games should be comfortable wins for the Blues, but the pressure will definitely be on, and Merson has boldly claimed Maresca will be sacked if he doesn’t win both.

“If they don’t win their next two games, the manager won’t be there,” he told Sky Sports.

“They’re playing against two of the worst teams to play in the Premier League for I don’t know how long in Southampton and Leicester. So, if they don’t win those two games, he will do well to keep his job.

“Chelsea have got to get in the Champions League. They need the Champions League to keep players like Cole Palmer as he will want to play in that competition.”

Merson has previously claimed the Blues will struggle to keep Palmer if they miss out on Champions League football again, but Chelsea director Jonathan Goldstein came out last week and insisted Maresca would be in charge for the remainder of the season.
