As Voetbal International reported, Henry van der Vegt (53) will be the new head coach of PEC Zwolle. At the end of this season, the assistant coach will succeed the departing Johnny Jansen. Van der Vegt has signed a two-year contract until the summer of 2027.
Van der Vegt was already in charge of the group last Sunday during the 1-3 victory over NAC Breda, with Jansen struggling with illness at home. After that match, the assistant said that he had discussions about the lead coaching role. Three days later, PEC made his appointment official.
The new manager seems a great fit, as Zwolle get a loyal figure to lead the team and look to build on this season’s current 14th-placed position. Van der Vegt played for FC Zwolle for many years as a midfielder and became director after his playing career. He has also previously been a youth coach and has been in the first team’s technical staff continuously since the 2019-20 season.
“With the appointment of Henry, we give our own people, in whom we have complete confidence, a chance”, said technical director Gerry Hamstra. “We have chosen a coach who has a clear football vision and playing style, fully pursues a top sports mentality, and of course, has the PEC DNA. In the many conversations we have had, his style of leadership, his ambition and improving players have also come to the fore.”
The official presentation of Van der Vegt will take place sometime after the current season. PEC will play at least three more matches this football year, starting with the IJsselderby against Go Ahead Eagles next Sunday. After that, it’s Willem II away and FC Groningen home, with a possible sequel in the play-offs.
