Pedro Emanuel has been appointed Vasco head coach. The 51-year-old Portuguese replaces Renato Gaúcho and begins his first spell in Brazilian football. The former Al-Fayha coach now takes charge in Rio.
According to Globo.com, negotiations accelerated in recent days after two weeks of unsuccessful talks with other candidates, with football executive Admar Lopes stepping up discussions. Despite stronger financial offers from Saudi clubs, Emanuel prioritised Vasco’s project and accepted the role.
The board were also encouraged that he showed no concern over the club’s SAF legal situation, having understood the context and maintained interest throughout talks.
His working methods were a key factor. Seen as studious and aligned with modern training, he matched the club’s push for modernity after it had focused on names such as Franclim Carvalho and Fernando Seabra.
During discussions he displayed knowledge of the squad and judged the group capable of producing more than it has so far this season. He will arrive with a Brazilian fitness coach to aid the staff’s adaptation to the squad and domestic game.
Before coaching, Emanuel enjoyed a successful playing career. The centre-back won honours with Porto, Boavista and Penafiel and was frequently a captain, noted for leadership.
That trait informed Vasco’s choice at a delicate point in the season. Admar already knew him from Porto’s golden generation, which won one Champions League, one Europa League and seven Portuguese league titles.
