Pedro Sanchez has condemned anti-Muslim chants heard during Spain’s 0-0 friendly with Egypt in Barcelona on Monday, calling the episode unacceptable and saying it must not happen again.
According to L'Équipe, at Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium a section of the 37,000 crowd whistled the Egyptian anthem, then a racist chant began in the 10th minute and was repeated in the 22nd.
In a post on X, the Spanish prime minister said Spain is a pluralist and tolerant country, and that neither the national team nor its fans should be tarnished by a disrespectful minority.
Lamine Yamal also condemned the behaviour. On Tuesday the Spanish football federation said it condemns any violence in stadiums and aligned itself with football’s anti-racism message.
Egypt’s federation on Wednesday branded the acts totally unacceptable, urged collective action to eradicate such behaviour from grounds, and welcomed the swift responses from the Spanish federation and local authorities.
