Manchester City have reason to feel positive after their 0-0 draw away at Sunderland on New Year’s Day, Pep Guardiola has insisted.

City were forced to settle for a point at the Stadium of Light despite dominating large spells of the contest, as a resolute Sunderland side delivered another of their disciplined defensive displays.

The result leaves Guardiola’s side playing catch-up in the Premier League title race, particularly after Arsenal’s latest statement victory against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium, but there was little sense of alarm from within the City camp.

The match itself followed a familiar pattern seen in recent weeks, with City controlling territory and possession but finding conversion inside the penalty area difficult. Early warning signs arrived when Bernardo Silva saw a close-range finish chalked off for offside, while Erling Haaland later failed to capitalise on a presentable first-half opening.

Sunderland, however, were not merely passive, threatening sporadically on the break and testing City’s concentration. There was also encouragement in midfield, with Rodri returning to action after the interval to add control and composure – a development Guardiola has previously highlighted as crucial during the club’s demanding winter schedule.

Manchester City’s pressure intensified in the second half, with near-misses from Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku underlining the fine margins separating dominance from decisive victory.

Speaking after the contest with TV broadcasters, Guardiola issued a positive response when asked for his initial verdict on what appeared to be a frustrating night on the pitch at the Stadium of Light.

“Good! We take the point. Second-half was excellent,” said Guardiola. “We cannot score in the six-yard box, how many times in the six-yard box against the keeper or another and could not convert.

“Of course, the threat they have is really good. But really pleased with the performance, especially second-half,” Guardiola said. “That’s the mystery! I don’t have an answer for your question,” he continued when asked about his side’s failure to break the deadlock.

“We created a lot against THAT team, in THIS stadium – especially second-half. First-half we struggled simply because we struggled against their pressing, but Rodri gave us the extra pass, the composure to break the line and after we could run. Second-half was much, much better.”

Offering further thoughts during his post-match press conference, Guardiola went on to admit, “I’m so proud and delighted with the way we played in this difficult stadium and against this difficult opponent. We did everything to win, but at the end we could not do it.”

But when asked whether he was left with a feeling of frustration in the North-East, the Catalan tactician insisted, “No. I’m old enough to not be frustrated for a result in football.”

Looking ahead, Manchester City now face little respite as a relentless fixture schedule continues, with domestic and European commitments piling up rapidly.

As highlighted in previous updates, Pep Guardiola is expected to lean heavily on rotation and squad depth, particularly with defensive fitness concerns already emerging. While dropped points may prove costly later in the campaign, Guardiola’s comments suggest internal confidence remains intact.

If Manchester City can translate performances of this level into sharper finishing in the coming weeks, the draw at Sunderland may yet be viewed as a platform rather than a setback.
