Real Madrid are planning to sign a new midfielder this summer, and one of the players they’ve been linked to in recent weeks is Rodri Hernandez. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner is facing an uncertain future at Manchester City, where he is only contracted until June 2027.
Man City are determined to ensure that Rodri does not leave anytime soon, with a new contract having been offered via the Spain international’s representatives. However, it is far from guaranteed that he will sign it, given he’s made it clear that he would welcome a move to the Bernabeu.
Man City head coach Pep Guardiola has now waded into the matter. Speaking to the media on Friday (via MD), he made it clear that he would open the door for Rodri to leave if he signals his intention to leave this summer.
“The club is above all of us: if a player is not happy, he has to leave. Let it stay the same if they are happy, and I think he is. If he is not, he should knock on the door of the sporting director, accept an offer according to his incredible quality, and then he will no longer belong to the club.
“I know what the club wants: that he stays, that he stays, that he stays. And I think he will. I’ve always had that feeling, but in the end I don’t know for certain.”
Rodri will play a big role for Spain at this summer’s World Cup in North America, and after the tournament ends, he could be set for a blockbuster move away from Man City. He must decide whether he sees his future at the Etihad Stadium, as the chance to join Real Madrid is unlikely to come around again.
It will certainly be interesting to follow the situation with Rodri, who for now, appears content to remain at Man City.
