Pep Guardiola says last season’s performance at Manchester City would have got him the sack at Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Guardiola’s side take on Real Madrid on Wednesday in the Champions League, with opposition boss Xabi Alonso under pressure following a bad run of form.
And the City boss says the pressure of managing the Spanish giants is unlike any other.
“I have sympathy because we worked together for one year and a half, two years,” Guardiola said when asked about Alonso’s situation. “It was an incredible experience with him.
“Barcelona and Madrid are the toughest clubs, I would say, to be a manager. The most difficult ones for the pressure, environment.
“If I’d have done last season, I would have been sacked six months before the end of the season.
“It’s a difficult place but he knows it. He’s been here. It’s the reality and it’s a question of winning games.
“I know they have a lot of absences. I know what happens when you want to build something but many players are injured. It happened ourselves last season but of course he’s capable to do it and what is required for that position, manager of Real Madrid.
“In everywhere today you have to win otherwise you are a problem.
“But in England, what happens in the locker room always remains there. In Spain, my experience at Barcelona is everybody knows everything.”
