Chief executive officer Ferran Soriano said: “Pep’s legacy is extraordinary and its true impact will be better assessed by Manchester City historians of the future.”

Guardiola was expected to take a sabbatical from the game meaning this role could be the only footballing venture he takes for the foreseeable future, though it is speculated that international management may be on the cards further down the line.

He leaves the City dugout as the most successful manager in the club’s history, lifting 20 major trophies since joining in July 2016.

The 55-year-old guided the club to six Premier League titles as well as a famous Champions League trophy in 2023, as well as three FA Cups and five Carabao Cups.

He was unable to add to his league title collection after failing to win at Bournemouth on Tuesday, which crowned Arsenal as Premier League champions before the final day of the season.

Guardiola’s contract was due to expire in the summer of 2027 but he has reached an agreement to step down 12 months early.

In a statement, he said: “Don’t ask me the reasons I’m leaving. There is no reason, but deep inside, I know it’s my time.

“Nothing is eternal, if it was, I would be here. Eternal will be the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I have for my Manchester City.”

Guardiola, who previously coached Barcelona and Bayern Munich, is expected to be replaced in the Man City dugout by former assistant coach Enzo Maresca, who most recently managed Chelsea.
