PGMOL chief Howard Webb says VAR reached the correct outcome in awarding Leeds United a penalty against Liverpool during their Premier League stalemate, despite debate over whether the overturn was clear and obvious.

According to the Mirror, Webb told Match Officials Mic'd Up it was a clear penalty because Ibrahima Konate fouled Wilfried Gnonto without playing the ball, and crucially the ball remained in play. He said referee Anthony Taylor believed it had gone out, but VAR could slow the footage, align the contact with the ball’s position and correct a clear on-field error.

Liverpool had established a two-goal lead at Elland Road when Konate’s challenge triggered the review. The on-field call was no penalty, then the decision was overturned and a spot-kick was awarded. The kick was converted.

The award swung momentum, with Leeds equalising moments after scoring from twelve yards in a chaotic contest. The collapse echoed a pattern under Arne Slot this season.

Slot later disputed the call, arguing the ball had already gone out when contact occurred and that the intervention produced the penalty. He added that Leeds’ first real chance was the one for 2-2, since the 2-1 from the spot was not a chance.
