Nordi Mukiele caused Villa problems with his aggressive positioning and competed well, but he was not at his best on the ball. Rated six.

Luke O'Nien faced an exceptional Ollie Watkins and this was probably his toughest test yet. He struggled to contain him and survived a few difficult moments. Rated five.

Omar Alderete was largely solid, used the ball well and won important defensive headers. He was substituted just after the hour and was hobbling, which might be a concern for Sunderland. Rated seven.
