The French Football Federation has called for a profound overhaul of FIFA governance, stopping short of naming Gianni Infantino. According to L'Équipe, Philippe Diallo was encouraged by the Élysée to harden his stance as the crisis began.
Diallo had initially expressed questions and concern when he learned of a plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, following The Times’ revelations on 28 July. The proposal was later dropped.
His remarks were measured, consistent with his public manner. That tone contrasted immediately with a much sharper broadside from UEFA, led by Aleksander Ceferin.
On 29 July, the European body said FIFA should no longer use the sport to generate wealth for itself and its allies.
The differing reactions set the tone for the early phase of FIFA’s governance row.
