Today’s photo of the day dates back to the 1989 Scottish Cup Final, forever etched in the minds of Celtic fans as the Joe Miller cup final.
The Bhoys had found things difficult after the incredible double winning Centenary season and ultimately finished 10 points behind Rangers, and four behind Aberdeen, in the league. Rangers also won the League Cup, while Celtic were eliminated by Dundee United in the quarter final.
20 May 1989 and a sun soaked Hampden was the stage for Celtic to not only salvage the season with some silverware, but also to deny Rangers a treble.
72,000 fans packed into the national stadium, a cup final attendance that has not been matched since in Scotland. The crowd witnessed Joe Miller capitalise on a defensive error in the 42nd minute, to slot home.
Miller’s goal was enough to separate the sides and give Celtic some late 80s joy. It would be another decade before Celtic would meet Rangers in a cup final again.
