New Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso was spotted consoling a leading member of his squad, on the back of the club’s meeting with Al-Hilal.

This comes after the player in question, in Federico Valverde, was responsible for missing a penalty at a crucial point in proceedings.

The Alonso era was of course kicked into gear at Real Madrid on Wednesday evening.

As much saw Los Blancos take to the pitch in Miami, Florida, for a Club World Cup group stage meeting with Saudi outfit Al-Hilal.

When all was said and done on a largely underwhelming night for the Spanish heavyweights, they were forced to settle for a share of the spoils, in a 1-1 draw.

As alluded to above, though, this came only after Federico Valverde was responsible for fluffing his lines from 12 yards.

After Real Madrid were awarded a penalty in the game’s dying moments, midfielder Valverde stepped up to take responsibility.

His ensuing effort, however, was well kept out by Yassine Bounou in the Al-Hilal goal.

The Uruguayan, in turn, was left looking crestfallen on the back of the full-time whistle at the Hard Rock Stadium.

And quick to comfort Valverde, as alluded to above, was his new manager, Xabi Alonso:
