The signing of Luis Diaz was FC Bayern’s top transfer last summer, but the deal is said to have caused displeasure at his former club Liverpool FC.
At struggling Liverpool FC, one personnel issue is apparently becoming more and more of a focal point: the departure of Luis Diaz. According to a report by CaughtOffside, coach Arne Slot never wanted the Colombian’s transfer to FC Bayern – internally, he even fought vehemently for an extension.
Slot is said to have commented on Diaz’s departure in no uncertain terms: „It was a sad day“. The attacking star, one of the most productive Liverpool players of the previous season, moved to Munich in the summer for around 70 million euros. While Diaz made an immediate impact at FC Bayern under Vincent Kompany and is now one of the most valuable attacking players of the season, his former club has noticeably lost some of its impact.
Sporting director Richard Hughes is said to have been largely responsible for the deal going through despite Slot’s resistance. According to the report, Hughes was far more attracted to the offer from Munich than the prospect of presenting Diaz with a new, high-paying contract. It is said of Hughes: „He saw no value in making Diaz a lucrative new offer.“ Slot was thus outvoted – a process that is now causing considerable resentment.
The Reds‘ sporting situation is exacerbating the discussion surrounding the transfer. Ten defeats this season and a recent 4-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League have plunged the club into a deep crisis. LFC are also clearly falling short of their own expectations in the Premier League, where they are twelfth in the table.

The expensive summer signings – including Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak – have so far failed to solve Slott’s problems. Instead, there is a growing conviction that Diaz’s departure was a crucial mistake. For months, Liverpool have lacked a player who combines pace, creativity and determination like the Colombian – and it is precisely these qualities that Diaz has regularly shown at FC Bayern since his transfer.
