Ligue 1 McDonald’s Matchday Eight, 18/10/2025THE MATCH Four goals from Mason Greenwood secured a fifth straight victory in all competitions for Olympique de Marseille, as De Zerbi’s men moved top of the Ligue 1 table after PSG’s 3-3 draw with Strasbourg. After initially going behind to a finish from Yassine Kechta, Greenwood responded with a penalty, and three goals in the second half before youngster Robinio Vaz grabbed his first goal of the season.Roberto De Zerbi’s men had a chance to go top of the table, following PSG and Strasbourg’s 3-3 draw on Friday evening and OGC Nice’s 3-1 win over Lyon just hours before kick-off at the Vélodrome. After a flurry of pyrotechnics from the Virage Nord and Sud, OM finally got underway. But Le Havre came out fighting with a high press early on, as OM managed to get a half chance through Greenwood, before HAC would pounce on the counter-attack. It would be De Lange of the two goalkeepers who was forced into a save after Fodé Doucouré’s strike on the rebound – the Dutchman was called upon for his second Ligue 1 start of the season after Geronimo Rulli’s late return from international duty. The away side would open the scoring through Yassine Kechta, after Matt O’Riley failed to meet a swinging deep cross just left of the box – and with Greenwood failing to track back effectively, Kechta managed to isolate O’Riley one-on-one before firing a low strike into the back of the net. Marseille would get the opportunity to level proceedings as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang skipped past Lloris, and the Frenchman left out an arm as the referee pointed immediately to the spot. To make matters worse for HAC, Lloris would be sent off for an intentional hand-ball (harshly) and it was Mason Greenwood who had the task of converting the penalty, which he did with a right-footed strike past Diaw. OM then had the impetus with the extra man, as Aubameyang whipped a perfect cross into Angel Gomes who headed straight into the arms of Diaw.

OM came out quick for the second period, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being flicked goalwards and the Gabon international’s strike was saved brilliantly by Mory Diaw. But the tempo slowed down, as Le Havre retreated defensively – and De Zerbi made three changes as Nadir, Vaz, and Murillo came on. After scoring his first of the evening, Greenwood would suddenly spark into life and put on show his full goal-scoring capabilities. A fine run into the HAC box ended with a killer finish at the near post to put OM into an all-important lead, before some busy work from Robinio Vaz saw the ball put on a plate for the Englishman to skip past the away defence and slot home for his hat-trick. It got even better moments later as he connected with Pavard’s cross to strike home at the near post past Diaw for a terrific quadruple. With those four goals, Olympique de Marseille sit at the top of Ligue 1 after eight matches played of the season with five straight victories in all competitions.

OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE PLAYER RATINGS Jeffrey De Lange – 5The Dutchman was called upon to replace Geronimo Rulli after the Argentinian stopper returned late for the international break. On his second start in Ligue 1 this season, OM’s number two had to save well from Fodé Doucouré’s strike in the first half.Leonardo Balerdi – 5

Nayef Aguerd – 6Benjamin Pavard – 7Emerson Palmieri – 5

Angel Gomes – 4A frustrating evening for the Englishman. It seems like Gomes suffers from the rotational system in play week by week by De Zerbi – he needs rhythm to get going and has not been used to playing in the number 8 role after playing deeper for Lille all of last season.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – 6

Had two strikes from outside the box in the first period, both didn’t test Diaw enough, but the Danish international combined well with Angel Gomes, once again being deployed in a double pivot with Matt O’Riley.

Matt O’Riley – 4

Late run in behind during the opening minutes was incisive, although he wasn’t in a great position to finish. Yet he was put under a lot of pressure defensively for HAC’s opening goal, struggling isolated one-on-one with Kechta, letting him cut on the inside before unleashing the strike for the opening goal.

Mason Greenwood – 8The Englishman showed off his true goal-scoring capabilities this evening, when it looked like he barely broke a sweat. Greenwood stepped up to convert the equalising penalty, before sending a deadly strike at the near post to put Les Phocéens in front. Then the action really started: Vaz set up the Englishman who slotted home at close range, before grabbing his fourth of the evening at the near post after Pavard’s cross.Igor Paixao – 6

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 5The Gabon international managed to win the penalty which was converted by Greenwood, but his involvement was limited – only making a total of two passes in the first period.

HAVRE ATHLETIC CLUB PLAYER RATINGS

Mory Diaw – 3Loïc Nego – 4Fodé Doucouré –  5Was out wide on the left side and had an advanced role, he already had two strikes on target and forced De Lange into a save before the 10 minute mark. He was a menace further with a well-struck half-volley just after HAC opened the scoring. Yanis Zouaoui – 5Yassine Ketcha – 6Arouna Sangante – 4Rassoul Ndiaye – 5
