Plymouth Argyle are set to sign QPR's Murphy Cooper in a £500,000 deal, with the keeper having been linked with MK Dons and Sheffield Wednesday.

Even though Plymouth had a positive final few months of the 2025/26 season, it ultimately ended in disappointment as they missed out on a play-off place.

A dismal start to the campaign was the reason they fell short, and there were many calls for Tom Cleverley to be sacked at that point.

However, the board stuck by the ex-England international, and he will now want to repay that faith by guiding Argyle back to the Championship next season.

To do that, the Pilgrims will need to be active in the transfer market, and Cleverley will have a few positions that he wants to address.

Bringing in a new keeper was a priority, and it appears Plymouth are about to secure a new stopper, as they have won the race to sign QPR’s Murphy Cooper.

West London Sport has revealed that the two clubs have reached an agreement for a fee worth up to £500,000 for the stopper, whilst a sell-on clause will also be part of the deal.

Cooper had been on the radar of MK Dons, who are newly-promoted to the third tier, and there had been links with Sheffield Wednesday after the keeper admitted he would be open to a return to Hillsborough after a successful loan spell with the Owls last season, where he had to fill in for the injured Pierce Charles in-between the sticks.

Yet, Plymouth are now set to complete a move for the 24-year-old, who has had loan spells in League One earlier in his career with Stevenage and Barnsley.

Murphy Cooper is an exciting signing for Plymouth Argyle

The goalkeeping position was a problematic one for Plymouth last season, with Conor Hazard spending most of the campaign as the number one, making 29 appearances.

But, the former Celtic man didn’t always convince, and with his contract expiring, he has now joined Wycombe Wanderers.

Therefore, Plymouth were always going to be in the market for a keeper, and even though James Storer has signed from Wolves, he is seen as someone for the future.

In Cooper, Argyle would be getting a keeper who should be able to make an instant impact, as he has plenty of EFL experience for his age.

It must be said that Cooper has been inconsistent over the years, but that’s to be expected given his age, and there’s no denying that he does have a lot of talent, which Cleverley and the recruitment team have recognised.

For £500,000, this could turn out to be a shrewd signing, and the fact they have beaten League One competition to sign Cooper is obviously a positive, and it shows the ambition at Home Park right now.

It’s also a great opportunity for Cooper, as he is at a stage in his career where he needs to be settled, and that wasn’t going to happen at QPR, as he has been out on loan regularly in the past.

So, he will be relishing the chance to become the main man, and whilst he will need to play well to keep his place in the XI, Cooper will hope to be an important figure in a promotion push for the Green Army.
