Portsmouth are seeing their former loanee Myles Peart-Harris begin to thrive in the Championship with Swansea City

It's fair to say that Portsmouth's return to the Championship after 12 years away has not gone to plan.

Pompey have won just one of their opening 14 games, and they sit bottom of the league table, six points off safety even at this early stage of the season.

It's been a tough start for John Mousinho's side, and it's clear that they're lacking real experienced Championship quality that could help them move up the table.

After winning the League One title last season, the early months of the campaign have brought Pompey back down to earth with a bump, and they may be frustrated to see a member of their title-winning squad thriving elsewhere in the Championship.

Myles Peart-Harris joined Portsmouth on loan in January, helping the club get over the line in their bid for promotion, and he's had his first taste of Championship football on loan at Swansea City this season, where he's beginning to develop into a really important player for Luke Wiliams' side.

Peart-Harris played 12 times for Pompey after joining them on loan in January of this year, and he started 10 games in total for Mousinho's side, scoring two goals.

The best way to describe his loan spell at Fratton Park would be solid without being spectacular, and while it was clear that he was a talented player, it was difficult for him to make a big impact given Pompey's impressive form and the fact he had joined halfway through the season.

Peart-Harris was sent on loan by Brentford again in the summer, this time joining Swansea, and after a bit of a slow start, he's really starting to find his feet in the Championship.

The 22-year-old has started the last four games for Swansea, and he scored their only goal of the game in a 1-0 win against Watford in midweek, capping a fantastic individual performance.

That result took Swansea to ninth in the Championship table, ten points and 15 places above Pompey, and given their struggles this season, it'll be easy to look on with envy after seeing Peart-Harris become a key player for one of their divisional rivals.

While he may not have set the world alight at Fratton Park last season, Mousinho could certainly do with someone of his quality at the club given their current struggles, and there could potentially be some regret that they didn't make more of an effort to bring him back to the club over the summer.

Against Watford on Tuesday night, Peart-Harris delivered a performance that he'd been threatening to deliver all season, and he was the best player on the pitch, particularly in the first half.

He scored one but was unlucky not to get another as he hit the post in the opening stage of the game, and had Zan Vipotnik been able to connect cleanly with his cross into the box, he could have registered an assist suitable for the highlight reel after an excellent run saw him beat two defenders before crossing it in.

Swansea boss Williams is clearly fond of Peart-Harris, and was full of praise for the 22-year-old when he spoke to the press after the match.

He told his press conference: "I loved the goal because he had a couple of chances in previous games where he didn’t assert himself, where I think he didn’t really believe at that moment that he was going to score.

"He's a young player who didn’t play at this level before and is very quickly adapting and then doing a bit more than adapting. He is looking like he's feeling more and more comfortable."

While Peart-Harris was scoring in a win which took Swansea into the top 10 of the Championship table, Pompey were suffering yet another defeat, this time away to relegation rivals Plymouth, which really leaves them in trouble.
