Portsmouth sign Gustavo Caballero on six-month loan from Santos with conditional obligation to buy | OneFootball

Portsmouth announced on Monday the loan signing of Paraguayan forward Gustavo Caballero from Santos. The club said the deal runs for an initial six months with an obligation to buy if set targets are met.

Caballero remains under contract with Santos until 23 July 2027. The move was agreed to give him more minutes after limited opportunities since arriving.

Signed by Santos in July last year, he made 12 appearances in the 2025 Campeonato Brasileiro, scoring once and providing one assist. In 2026 he featured in the opening matches of the Campeonato Paulista and the Brasileirão.

Before the move to England, he attracted interest from Vitória de Guimarães, Paris FC and received enquiries from Vasco. He also weighed staying at Santos to play alongside Neymar before deciding on the loan.

Born in San Lorenzo, Paraguay, Caballero turns 25 in September. He has spent his career in Paraguayan football with Deportivo Capiatá, Sportivo Ameliano and Nacional, where he stood out before joining Santos. In 2025 he also appeared for Paraguay’s under-23s in friendly matches.
