Rafael Leão and Raphaël Guerreiro were each on target this weekend for two of Europe’s biggest clubs, scoring goals for AC Milan and Bayern Munich in Italy and Germany respectively.
On what proved a good weekend for Portuguese goalscorers abroad, Leão got things off to a fine start in Friday evening’s game in Serie A. The former Sporting man put Milan ahead against Pisa at San Siro with a long-distance shot, although the Rossoneri were ultimately pegged back and had to settle for a frustrating 2-2 draw.
Astonishingly, Leão recently went 17 months between goals at Milan’s home stadium in Serie A, before his brace in the 2-1 win over Fiorentina last weekend. The dropped points against Pisa saw Leao’s side slip from top spot in the Italian top flight down to 3rd place, with champions Napoli leading the standings after eight rounds.
Guerreiro in form
Meanwhile in the Bundesliga, Raphaël Guerrero continued his productive recent form by coming off the bench at half time to score in Bayen Munich’s 3-0 win at Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday. Hosts Gladbach suffered a major setback when Jens Castrop was sent off on 19 minutes, but the score remained level at 0-0 going into the break.
Bayern boss Vincent Kompany opted to throw Guerreiro on at half time, but their opponents held firm until the 64th minute when Joshua Kimmich finally broke the deadlock for the champions. Guerreiro made it 2-0 five minutes later. The Portugal international earned a generous assist later on when his pass to Lennart Karl was followed by a wonder strike from distance by the teenage sensation.
Guerreiro now has two goals and two assists in his last four matches in all competitions. The triumph over Gladbach was Guerreiro’s 50th victory in a Bayern shirt and with his contract up at the end of the season, speculation over a new deal for the 31-year-old to stay in Bavaria seems inevitable.
