Manchester City may face yet more loan interest in Kalvin Phillips during the upcoming summer, despite a preference for selling permanently.
The England international’s long-term future at the Etihad Stadium remains largely unresolved beyond the end of the ongoing campaign, with Phillips remaining professional throughout a difficult spell at the club.
Manchester City’s stance has gradually shifted towards seeking a permanent solution for Phillips, however the financial realities – including the midfielder’s wages – have complicated potential exits, leaving loan moves as the most accessible route for interested clubs.
From Kalvin Phillips’ perspective, regular football remains the priority ahead of the latter stages of his career and outstanding international ambitions, with Sheffield United the latest to offer a route back to the summit of the game until the end of the ongoing season.
And according to the information of journalist Alan Nixon, Burnley are ready to make a move for Kalvin Phillips during the upcoming summer market in an attempt to bring them immediately back into the Premier League – should they be relegated, as anticipated.
However, it is pointed out that any deal for the Manchester City midfielder is expected to be a loan attempt as opposed to a permanent agreement for the Englishman.
Burnley’s interest is rooted in their desire to add top-flight experience and leadership to a squad that would be tasked with mounting an immediate promotion push from the Championship.
Phillips’ pedigree as a proven Premier League and England international makes him an appealing option, particularly if Manchester City are again willing to subsidise a portion of his wages.
However, from Manchester City’s side, another loan would represent a continuation rather than a conclusion of Phillips’ situation, and while a successful spell could boost his value, there is also a growing sense that final clarity will be required sooner rather than later.
As the summer window approaches, Manchester City may be forced to decide between accepting further temporary solutions or reassessing their financial expectations to facilitate a permanent departure.
Kalvin Phillips’ performances between now and the end of the season at Bramall Lane will be crucial in determining whether Burnley’s anticipated approach develops into a serious negotiation.
