Sunderland’s surge has opened a genuine route to Europe and put a premium on every place in the Premier League table. Wins over Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur across the international break have lifted Regis Le Bris’ side to 10th.
According to Sunderland Echo, the league’s merit payments, based on the current standings and drawn from combined UK and international pots, exclude commercial revenue and equal share sums. At present, 10th would be worth £29.1m to the Black Cats.
The scale currently reads: Arsenal £53.1m, Manchester City £50.4m, Manchester United £47.7m and Aston Villa £45.0m. Liverpool in fifth are at £42.4m, followed by Chelsea £39.8m, Brentford £37.1m, Everton £34.5m and Brighton & Hove Albion £31.9m.
Below them it is AFC Bournemouth £26.5m, Fulham £23.8m, Crystal Palace £21.2m and Newcastle United £18.6m. Then Leeds United £15.9m, Nottingham Forest £13.3m, West Ham United £10.7m, Tottenham Hotspur £7.9m, Burnley £5.3m and Wolverhampton Wanderers £2.6m.
With six matches left, Sunderland could still climb. Catching Liverpool in fifth would match Liverpool’s current payout, while seventh, occupied by Brentford, already clears £35m. This weekend’s opponents, Aston Villa, sit fourth, and Newcastle’s dip to 14th has reduced their haul.
Holding 10th would still be lucrative, effectively covering last summer’s fees for Nordi Mukiele £12m, Robin Roefs £11.5m and Bertrand Traore £2.5m, with about £3.1m spare. Sunderland have not finished in the top half since 2010/11 under Steve Bruce, when a team featuring Asamoah Gyan, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck took 10th.
