Premier League Team of the Weekend as Aston Villa dominate

Here’s our Premier League Team of the Weekend from Gameweek 33, featuring a clutch of Aston Villa stars and top performers from Arsenal, Liverpool and Crystal Palace.

Premier League Team of the Weekend

GK: Dean Henderson – Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace deserved a lot of credit for shutting Bournemouth out after Chris Richards was sent off on the stroke of halftime at Selhurst Park. Dean Henderson was kept busy as the visitors peppered shots from all angles, but it was to no avail as the former Manchester United goalkeeper made four saves.

RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – Liverpool

What a way to make your return. Sidelined since March with injury, Trent Alexander-Arnold came off the bench for Liverpool to score the winner against Leicester City with a lovely half-volley on his weak foot.

CB: Maxime Lacroix – Crystal Palace

Keeping Bournemouth’s front four quiet is no easy feat. Doing so with ten men for an entire half after one of your defensive partners has been sent off is impressive.

Maxime Lacroix marshalled the backline admirably in such circumstances, making ten clearances, two blocks and one recovery. He is fast becoming one of the most reliable centre-backs in the Premier League.

CB: Dean Huijsen – Bournemouth

If he didn’t have a release clause, Dean Huijsen’s price tag would be rising on a weekly basis. The Spain international put in another accomplished performance as the Cherries kept a clean sheet against Palace.

He was arguably his side’s best performer for a second consecutive week, completing eight clearances, three interceptions, three recoveries and 100 percent of his tackles. He also made 15(!) passes into the final third.

LB: Ian Maatsen – Aston Villa

Questions around his defensive game remain, but Ian Maatsen is still electric going forward. The full-back scored a terrific goal to help Aston Villa secure a 4-1 win over Newcastle United, a massive victory in the top five race. He also created one big chance and made two recoveries.

CM: Youri Tielemans – Aston Villa

It’s gone a bit under the radar how good Youri Tielemans has been, particularly in the second half of the campaign. The Belgian dictated play against Newcastle, completing 18 passes into the final third and creating three chances, once of which set up Ollie Watkins’ opener after 33 seconds.

CM: Martin Odegaard – Arsenal

Martin Odegaard only came away with one assist from Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Ipswich Town on Sunday, but he could have had more after creating five chances for his teammates. He could have had a goal too after one of his three efforts hit the post.

The Norwegian barely put a foot wrong all game, completing 89 percent of his passes and 100 percent of his long balls (9 out of 9).

CAM: Morgan Rogers – Aston Villa

It was a tight call between Morgan Rogers and Marco Asensio for this spot, but the England attacker just about pips it. He got the assist for Villa’s fourth against the Magpies, although if we’re being honest all the credit belongs to Amadou Onana for his stupendous strike.

But the 22-year-old did make a really impressive run in the first half, showing off his ball carrying skills, and had three shots on target, the joint-most of any player in the Premier League this past weekend.

RF: Bryan Mbeumo – Brentford

A real five-star performance from Bryan Mbeumo on Saturday as he was involved in three of Brentford’s four goals against Brighton. The Cameroon international punished the Seagull’s inability to defend in transition, cutting in from the right for both of his goals.

After being set up by teammate Yoane Wissa for his second, Mbeumo returned the favour in the 58th minute with an assist for the striker. That was one of seven chances he created, more than any other player at the weekend.

CF: Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa

Ollie Watkins didn’t take too kindly to starting just one out of six matches for Villa prior to Saturday, so he started like a cannon ball against Newcastle, blasting his way through the defence to score inside the first minute.

The 29-year-old looked on it all day and even chipped in with an assist for Maatsen. Marcus Rashford has a job on his hands to regain the starting role up front.

LF: Leandro Trossard – Arsenal

We’ve had to do a little bit of tinkering here as Leandro Trossard starred up top for Arsenal against Ipswich Town, so we’ve slotted him in at his preferred left forward spot to fit him in.

After starting the bench for Wednesday’s win at Real Madrid, the Belgian opened the scoring for the Gunners at Portman Road, getting the shot away even as he fell to the ground. He followed it up with a second after the interval, firing low and hard to beat goalkeeper Alex Palmer. It’s the first time all season he’s scored twice in one game.
