How do we gauge it?

Which Premier League teams are outperforming their rivals this season?

For Newcastle United and the rest, it surely comes down to what it always does.

How many matches you win.

So I have had a look at all 20 Premier League clubs this season…

We are now seven months into the 2024/25 season, this is how many matches each Premier League team has won (and lost), in Premier League AND domestic cup competitions (as of the morning of 3 March 2025):

25 and 3 Liverpool

21 and 10 Newcastle United

18 and 9 Man City

16 and 7 Brighton

16 and 8 Forest

15 and 8 Fulham

15 and 9 Bournemouth

15 and 9 Villa

15 and 9 Chelsea

15 and 10 Palace

15 and 16 Tottenham

14 and 13 Brentford

13 and 14 Man U

10 and 14 West Ham

9 and 11 Everton

9 and 19 Wolves

7 and 20 Leicester

6 and 24 Southampton

5 and 17 Ipswich

Naturally, losing any match is a punch to the gut. Especially when it means going out of the FA Cup, as was the case on Sunday at St James’ Park for Newcastle United against Brighton.

However, the fact remains, that it is still only Liverpool who have won more matches this season in the Premier League and cups. Plus of course, this is Liverpool who were knocked out of the FA Cup by Plymouth…

It can happen to the best of us.

The way some Newcastle United fans go on as well, you would think NUFC had lost to some team of no-hopers.

As you can see above, only Liverpool, Newcastle, Arsenal and Man City have a better record of winning football matches this season.

Also, Newcastle United ran into a team in great form, Brighton have now won five games in a row. Beating Chelsea 2-1 and 3-0, then hammering Southampton 4-0, before defeating another team in great form, Bournemouth, before we got to this FA Cup clash at St James’ Park which could have gone either way.
