In what is arguably the most anticipated fixture of the autumn Premier League schedule, Newcastle United will be desperate to make a statement against Liverpool as they look to turn around their underwhelming opening fixture.

Monday night promises an electric atmosphere at St James’ Park, with the two clubs having clashed repeatedly off the pitch during a transfer window full of tension. Liverpool spent much of the summer circling Alexander Isak and competing with Newcastle for Europe’s elite talent, fuelling a rivalry that goes beyond the 90 minutes.

Fresh from a goalless draw with Aston Villa, The Magpies will be determined to bounce back. However, with still no reputable signing in the striker position, the shortage in the position could once again prove costly.

As reports suggest, Anthony Gordon is expected to start up front in place of the absent Isak, who is still out of the squad as speculation lingers over his push for a Liverpool move in the saga dominating headlines all summer.

Both managers addressed the media ahead of the clash, with Eddie Howe offering an honest assessment of Newcastle’s search for reinforcements.

Eddie Howe on Newcastle’s striker situation

“We are still actively in the market, but as I say all the time, any transfer has to be right for a number of different reasons,” Howe said.

“With PSR you’re always trying to manage that situation. If we make a signing that goes against that, we put ourselves in a risky position. Yes, we have a need, but we can’t put ourselves in a position where we’re forced to sell players like Elliot Anderson or Yankuba Minteh.”

Arne Slot on Magpies challenge

“If you go to Newcastle, you know what to expect,” the Liverpool boss said.

“We played them twice last season and their intensity levels were above ours. In the away game, for the first 60 minutes, their intensity was so far ahead of us. They are a very good team, who can make it a fight but also have players who are very comfortable on the ball. One of the best sides in the league, and one of the most difficult away games you can face in a season.”

How to watch the game

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League in the UK and will kick off at 20:00 (BST), Monday 25 August.
