Ivan Provedel has been discharged from hospital after shoulder surgery, with the Lazio goalkeeper facing a lengthy lay-off.
The goalkeeper was injured in training, with an MRI showing a lesion of the glenohumeral ligament and involvement of the glenoid labrum.
He must wear a stabilising brace for at least a month, after which rehabilitation can begin. Reports indicate he faces four to five months out, ending his season early.
“We must not rush this, there are some biological steps that have to be taken, so nature must take its course,” said surgeon Giovanni Di Giacomo to Corriere dello Sport.
“Provedel was highly motivated and eager to get back on the field. However, this is a serious injury. For a goalkeeper, a shoulder issue like this is the equivalent of a torn anterior cruciate ligament of the knee for a midfielder.”
Lazio have turned to second-choice goalkeeper Edoardo Motta, signed from Reggina in January. He made his Serie A debut in Monday’s 2-1 win over Sassuolo and only turned 21 in January.
