Manchester United could be on the verge of landing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte. However, while one pundit praises the potential move, another criticizes it, noting that it’s not up to the standards the Red Devils should have.

L’Équipe reports that PSG and Manchester United are close to finalizing a loan deal for Ugarte, which includes a €60 million obligation to buy. Negotiations between the two clubs have progressed significantly tonight, and the deal could be wrapped up within the next few hours.

Recently, the Red Devils have been eyeing the Uruguayan player, but the transfer fee has been a sticking point. Despite this, the deal seems to be moving in the right direction.

However, talkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino believes Ugarte might not be the right fit for Manchester United in terms of the profile the team should pursue.

“You have to have certain standards to play for Manchester United,” Cascarino said Thursday on talkSPORT. “Some of the players that they have in recent history haven’t got that, or they’ve seen better days… [Luis Enrique has] not played Ugarte a lot at PSG.

“They had [Warren] Zaïre-Emery, who’s a young midfielder who made the French squad, who’s a really top footballer, but [Manchester United] can’t get him because the future is him at PSG, so they’re prepared to let Ugarte go.

“Vitinha as well, PSG, who played for Wolves… that was their midfield for periods. I’m not sure if it’s just another body that bolsters their squad, but actually doesn’t make a huge change or difference to Manchester United as a football team.”

Ugarte made 37 appearances for the Ligue 1 champions last season, contributing three assists. The former Sporting Lisbon standout had a solid start to the campaign, but his playing time dipped in the second half as he shifted from being a regular starter to more of a rotational player.
