Karl-Heinz Rummenigge drew some lessons for FC Bayern from the Champions League final. He was particularly impressed by PSG’s transfer strategy
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge watched the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Arsenal live in Budapest. In the Puskás Arena, the Bayern supervisory board member saw PSG defend their title in the premier class and beat Arsenal 4-3 on penalties.
For Rummenigge, the French side’s triumph was no coincidence. In an interview with Absolut Bayern, the long-time FC Bayern CEO explained: „In the end, Paris Saint-Germain are the deserved winners because they played the most attractive soccer of this premier class season – together with FC Bayern. Football is a game and it should be fun and bring joy. PSG did just that.“
Arsenal, on the other hand, missed a great opportunity in the 70-year-old’s view: „In my opinion, Arsenal missed a great chance when many of PSG’s stars were no longer on the pitch in the second half of extra time. Arsenal should have pushed again in this phase, but in the end they lost the game.“
The final is also interesting for FC Bayern because PSG have undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years: away from an expensive star ensemble and towards a functioning team with a clear playing idea. Rummenigge also sees this as an important lesson for Munich
With a view to the German record champions‘ squad planning, Rummenigge made it clear what he believes will be important next summer. It is not the most expensive names that are decisive, but the most suitable ones
„The lesson for FC Bayern is not that you have to make the most expensive transfer market, but the smartest. PSG were only really successful when they went from being an expensive star ensemble to a real team. You don’t have to constantly orientate yourself towards certain English or Spanish players either,“ emphasised the Bayern supervisory board member
Rummenigge is also sending a clear signal to the sporting management around Max Eberl and Christoph Freund. FC Bayern must make further investments in the summer, especially with a view to the international competition. At the same time, the Munich club should not define its path through actionism
Rummenigge believes the club is fundamentally well positioned under Vincent Kompany: „We have an excellent coach, a clear sporting idea and should continue on this path consistently with Vincent Kompany.“
Remarkably, FC Bayern continued to be the talk of the town even after the final in Budapest, with the spectacular semi-final second leg against PSG leaving a lasting impression on many observers
„For me, the best and most attractive game of this Champions League season was definitely our 5:4 in the semi-final in Paris – that was soccer at its best, as many confirmed to me once again in Budapest,“ explained Rummenigge
According to him, several prominent guests shared this assessment, including Portugal legend Luis Figo, who was sitting next to Rummenigge, and UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin
For Bayern’s supervisory board, this game is proof that the Munich team is already close to the absolute top of Europe. „This game showed what our team is made of and we have to consistently build on that with our coach,“ said Rummenigge
The message is clear: FC Bayern needs reinforcements in the summer, but not a transfer show at any price. The decisive factor will be to bring in players who can implement Kompany’s idea even better on the pitch.
