PSG coach Luis Enrique refuses to rule out that Gigio Donnarumma could start the second consecutive game on the bench and reveals he received an offer from Atletico Madrid in 2011, but he already had an agreement with Roma.

Italy international Donnarumma was benched in PSG’s latest league match against Lens on Saturday, and the same could happen tomorrow when the Ligue 1 giants host Atletico Madrid in the Champions League Round 4.

Matvey Safonov started for PSG this past weekend. Luis Enrique had explained to local media that Lens’ pressing would cause trouble for his team, so he picked the Russian keeper over Donnarumma.

Sky Sport Italia asked the Spanish tactician if he’d decide the same tomorrow, given that Atletico Madrid are also known for their effective high pressing.

“You’ll see tomorrow. I’ll make the best decision for the team,” Luis Enrique replied.

“The only obligation players have when they sign a contract is to be ready when the team and the coach need them. I am lucky to have Gigio, Safonov and [Arnau] Tenasthree, three great keepers.”

A former Roma coach, Luis Enrique, worked in the capital from 2011 to 12 but left the Stadio Olimpico after finishing seventh. Sky asked if he could have joined Atletico before moving to the capital.

“Roma arrived first,” admitted Luis Enrique.

“There was a verbal agreement before signing a contract, and Roma arrived first.”
