Paris Saint-Germain lifted the Trophée des champions on Thursday, beating OM on penalties after a 2-2 draw, having equalised in the final seconds. The result extended their perfect shootout run to five since December 2024.
As reported by L'Équipe, the run has spanned multiple competitions. It began on 22 December 2024 with a Coupe de France tie against Lens that finished 1-1, PSG prevailing 5-4 in the shootout.
A few weeks later came the Champions League last 16 second leg at Liverpool, which ended 1-0 on the night before a 4-1 shootout success.
The sequence resumed in 2025-26 with victory over Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup, 2-2 then 4-3 on penalties, and against Flamengo in the Intercontinental Cup, 1-1 then 2-1, before the latest success.
Three of the five shootouts were finals and delivered silverware. Remarkably, three different goalkeepers have featured, Matveï Safonov against Lens and Flamengo, Lucas Chevalier against Tottenham and OM, and Gianluigi Donnarumma at Liverpool.
Credit has also been directed towards Luis Enrique and goalkeeping coach Borja Alvarez. Since 2020, PSG have won seven of their eight shootouts, the exception a last 16 defeat to Nice on 31 January 2022 after 0-0 and a 5-6 shootout.
