FLW's QPR fan pundit has given his verdict on the club's owners
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
QPR have made a solid start to life under Julien Stéphan this season as they look to improve on their 15th place finish in the Championship from last year.
The Hoops endured a difficult couple of campaigns lately, but their 15th place finish was their best result since 2022, having come 18th and 20th in the two terms prior.
The London outfit are mid-table in these early stages of the campaign, despite a number of injury issues causing headaches for Stéphan.
The Frenchman has earned credit from supporters, and the owners should be pleased with the work he’s done so far.
QPR’s owners, Ruben Gnanalingam, Richard Reilly and Amit Bhandia, have been criticised in the recent past for their running of the club, but things might be on the right track now.
When asked if he trusts the owners to take the team forward, FLW’s QPR fan pundit Louis Moir claimed that they have done well to turn things around in the last couple of years.
He has cited the appointment of Christian Nourry as CEO as a key move, praising the impact he’s had on the club since taking on his role at Loftus Road in January 2024.
“I think I’ve been very, very critical of the board and the current ownership over the last few years,” Moir told Football League World.
“Obviously, they’ve stuck around, they’ve probably realised the mistakes they’ve made.
“They want to do things differently, and obviously bringing in Christian Nourry has helped massively with that.
“But, with the way things are now, on and off the pitch, we’re in a miles better place than where we were even a few years ago, and it is looking like a completely different club.
“In that respect, I’ve got to say that now I probably do trust them to take the club forward because it’s clearly happening.
“And, like I say, with Christian Nourry coming in, he’s done a lot of good things on and off the pitch that has benefitted the club already in his short spell here.
“Because it’s not really been that long at all, if you look at it, but I think with the way we are, with the way the recruitment is going, the way we’re able to attract a manager like we have, players like we have.”
Moir believes that the support have stuck through these owners through thick and thin, and that if things keep improving then the club has the potential to grow: “The support home and away with the fans it’s been good, it’s not been a great club in the last few years, inconsistent and not achieving much, and that support has been there.
“That will only grow as well if we continue to become a better side, and I think I do trust the people in charge now.
“It’s a totally different club to what it was, especially a decade ago, but more so last few years, it’s been poor overall, and now we’re finally heading in that right direction.”
QPR earned 15 points from their opening 10 games, which could be enough for 69 points if they maintain this level of form.
That has been enough to contend for a play-off place in the past, so supporters will be hopeful the team can be in the mix this season.
The appointment of Martí Cifuentes proved an important turning point for the club, and their recruitment has also improved in that time as well.
QPR looked destined for relegation at one point, but now fans can seriously think about being in the fight for a play-off place.
The Hoops lack the resources of some of their Championship rivals, and a proper promotion challenge will be a difficult task.
