Racist incident mars Liverpool vs Bournemouth opener at Anfield
The Premier League’s opening clash between Liverpool & Bournemouth which ended 4 - 2 in favor of the Reds, was overshadowed by racist incident targeting Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo.
Referee Anthony Taylor halted the first half after Semenyo was abused by supporter. The Bournemouth striker preparing to take throw in, was spat on and insulted by fan seated in the disabled section. Officials quickly intervened removing the individual from the stadium.
Reds coach Arne Slot voiced his anger at the episode calling it:
"a disgrace on night meant to honor Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who tragically passed away in July"
Slot revealed he personally spoke to Semenyo post match praising his dignity:
"He’s not only fantastic player but also strong human being. Such behavior has no place in football"
Despite the ugly incident, Liverpool delivered winning start to their campaign overcoming Bournemouth 4 - 2 to secure their 1st 3 point of the new PL season.
