When Ibrox Noise published Don Goodman’s suggestion of Palace stopper Sam Johnstone, we had to laugh a little at the reaction of some fans who scoffed and immediately suggested other areas of the pitch were more urgently in need of work.
These, we’re sure, were the same fans who initially endorsed Jon McLaughlin as number one, and mocked the idea we needed a new goalie while he and then-87-year-old Allan McGregor were our only choices.
With all due respect, we’ve learned the majority of football fans literally don’t have a clue (hopefully excluding yourself), and we imagine a lot of the fans saying we don’t need a new goalie have been ironically cursing how bad Jack Butland has been since last March, while probably dismissing Liam Kelly as a replacement as well.
In short, yes, Rangers do need a new goalie – we don’t know how long Butland is out, and he’s also absolutely horrendous these days on Jon McLaughlin levels, while Liam Kelly is an unknown quantity as a first-choice.
So if we can pick up a half decent stopper on loan to cover the rest of the season and give us 3 options that’s something positive.
Let’s not dismiss goalie as a position – as Rangers fans these days our supporters now have a bad habit of rejecting it as a position that requires work – yes, areas in front do too, but if the goalie ain’t stopping the ball, ain’t doing his job, does it matter if Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi are in front of him?
Let’s get in a new goalie because the days of Goram and McGregor are sadly long gone.
