Scottish Premiership club Rangers are talking with Atalanta to sign Ben Godfrey on loan with an option to buy, according to journalist Luca Bendoni.
Manager Derek McInnes wants defensive reinforcements at the Scottish Premiership club after replacing Danny Rohl.
They were linked with Zalaegerszegi centre-back Akpe Victory last month, but a move could be off the cards following Rohl’s departure.
McInnes has his own preferences, and a deal for Godfrey to join until next summer could be in the offing.
The 28-year-old Englishman, who was once dubbed ‘one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders’, spent the second half of last season on loan at Danish Superliga club Brondby.
The Rangers target was with Sheffield United in the English Championship in the first half of the season.
Godfrey’s return to the United Kingdom is now being looked at as the Light Blues prepare for next season. He brings plenty of experience and quality to the table.
The former Everton defender has made 85 Premier League appearances and won two international caps for England.
Godfrey can play as a centre-back, right-back and left-back, and McInnes could do with his versatility.
Rangers need a better squad to challenge Celtic next season, and the Englishman could be a perfect addition to their defence.
The Bears also want to bolster their goalkeeping options and are monitoring Hull City’s Ivor Pandur and Palermo’s Sebastiano Desplanches.
They have to get it right this summer to have a chance of winning the Scottish Premiership title next term.
