Marcus Rashford’s £40m exit clause at Manchester United has expired, meaning any sale of the forward will now have to be negotiated.
The provision lapsed on 15 July, removing what had been a fixed route out of Old Trafford. David Ornstein reports the change leaves his future firmly unresolved.
Rashford is now set to return to training. Having been with England at the World Cup, the 28-year-old will link back up with team-mates who featured in the latter stages of the tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Any interest will now be assessed by all parties. Rashford remains contracted to United until 2028, so the club are under no immediate pressure to sell. Sources indicate he has already turned down proposals, some more lucrative than his current deal.
Notably, the clause was not open to United’s fiercest rivals. Neither Manchester City nor Liverpool were able to trigger it, a deliberate protection built into its terms.
Barcelona, where Rashford spent last season on loan, opted against a permanent move. The Catalans held an option worth €30m but chose not to exercise it, instead signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for €80m to fill that role.
His loan spell in Spain was productive. Rashford made 49 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists as he rebuilt his reputation away from England.
His United record remains substantial despite recent struggles. A product of the academy, Rashford has made more than 400 appearances and scored 138 goals since his debut in February 2016. He has not, however, featured for the club since December 2024.
United appear braced for a long summer. With the clause gone and Rashford having rejected moves, the question of his future may not be answered swiftly as the window unfolds.
