Mexico’s round of 32 match saw kick-off delayed by an hour due to a severe thunderstorm, before home support roared them through to a first World Cup knockout win since 1986.

Julian Quinones opened the scoring, then Jimenez rifled into the top corner in the 31st minute.

Jimenez, a fan favourite after five years at Wolves, re-signed as a free agent this summer and also scored in the tournament’s opening game against South Africa.

Mexico have won all four of their games, scoring eight and conceding none, the first team to start with four straight clean sheets at a World Cup since Italy in 1990.

If England beat DR Congo tonight, they will face Mexico in the last 16 at the famous Azteca Stadium.

Wolves defender David Moller Wolfe also advanced as Norway beat Ivory Coast 2-1, with Antonio Nusa putting them ahead, Amad Diallo equalising on 74 minutes and Erling Haaland winning it four minutes from time, while Wolfe played 90.

Norway will face Brazil in the next round on Sunday, and the next Wolves player in a round of 32 game is Sasa Kalajdzic for Austria against Spain on Thursday, before Jose Sa and Portugal meet Croatia on Friday.
