Globo.com reports that Rayan, one of Carlo Ancelotti’s surprise World Cup picks, has matched Philippe Coutinho by becoming only the second Vasco academy product to represent Brazil at a World Cup this century.
So far, they are the only players to come through São Januário’s ranks to reach the tournament in this period. Midfielder Andrey Santos was in contention during the cycle but missed Ancelotti’s final squad.
The 19-year-old forward joined Bournemouth in January in a 35 million euros deal, 28.5 million guaranteed and 6.5 million in add-ons. Vasco received around 25 million euros upfront, the biggest sale in the club’s history.
Since leaving Vasco he has impressed in English football, delivering five goals and two assists in 13 appearances for Bournemouth.
Coutinho featured at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he was among Brazil’s standout performers.
