Ronald Koeman made a late call for RB Leipzig loanee Lutsharel Geertruida to join the Netherlands squad for the World Cup. The 25-year-old is set to return to his parent club as Sunderland aren't willing to activate their option to convert his loan to a permanent deal for €23 million.

However, he'll head into the World Cup as Jurriën Timber deemed unfit, despite his return to action in Arsenal’s Champions League defeat to PSG. Including games against France and Austria in Euro 2024, Geertruida has 21 caps for his national team.

Koeman previously raised fitness issues as the main reason for the absence of Jeremie Frimpong, and he has now picked Geertruida over the ex-Bayer Leverkusen wide player. The Netherlands will start their campaign against Japan on June 14th.
