Xaver Schlager will leave RB Leipzig after this season. According to media reports, the 28-year-old Austrian international has already informed the Saxons that he will not be renewing his expiring contract. It is therefore clear that Schlager will be available on a free transfer in the summer – and that is precisely what has prompted prominent advocates to come forward
Sky pundit Lothar Matthäus sees the central midfielder as a potential option for FC Bayern. The Bayern legend believes Schlager would be a good fit for Munich in both sporting and structural terms. „As Leon Goretzka is leaving FC Bayern, Schlager could be a good fit. He is available on a free transfer, has international experience and has known the Bundesliga for years,“ explained Matthäus. He particularly emphasised that Schlager has long since not only been a strong tackler, but also makes his mark in the game

However, a potential move to Säbener Straße would not be a foregone conclusion for Schlager. There is a lot of competition in the Bayern midfield. With Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Tom Bischof, Munich already have several central options. There is also Konrad Laimer, Schlager’s compatriot of all people, with whom FC Bayern are currently negotiating an extension to his contract, which runs until 2027
On the contrary: „Schlager is like Laimer’s twin on the pitch – just as tenacious and strong in tackles,“ says the 64-year-old. In his mind’s eye, Laimer could be used more as a right-back in future if Schlager were to come to Munich. A model that would also open up new tactical options for Vincent Kompany
However, it remains to be seen whether a Bayern move will actually happen. According to information from BILD, Schlager is currently leaning towards a free transfer to the English Premier League, where there is said to be concrete interest, although details of potential clubs are not yet known
One thing is certain: Schlager is one of the most sought-after players without a contract for the summer of 2026. FC Bayern would be an obvious destination in sporting terms – but it remains to be seen whether Munich really see a need in their already crowded midfield.
