Real Madrid confirmed on Thursday the signing of French defender Ibrahima Konaté on a four-year contract running to 30 June 2030. The club said in a statement that the move concludes a deal that had been progressing for weeks and was timed around the presidential election.
Florentino Pérez indicated during his campaign that Konaté would arrive if he were re-elected, a pledge now honoured with the agreement made official.
At 27, Konaté joins after ending his spell at Liverpool, where he became one of the Premier League’s standout centre-backs thanks to his power, recovery pace and aerial dominance. He brings top-level European experience and arrives with the aim of raising the competitiveness of a defence set for significant renewal this summer.
His arrival gives the head coach a deep pool of centre-backs for a demanding season. Konaté will vie for minutes with Antonio Rüdiger, Dean Huijsen, Éder Militao and Raúl Asencio as the back line looks to regain its former solidity.
The Frenchman’s signing follows the recent addition of Marc Cucurella, underlining the club’s focus on reinforcing the defence.
The announcement marks another step in Madrid’s rebuild for the new campaign. With Konaté tied down until 2030, the squad is being shaped to compete for trophies in Spain and Europe.
