Real Madrid’s intent to reinforce the left-back position remains strong, but recent developments suggest that Miguel Gutierrez, once viewed as a potential solution, has fallen down the pecking order.
According to AS, the Girona defender’s stock has dropped significantly due to his club’s underwhelming season, prompting doubts within the Madrid hierarchy.
While Gutierrez is technically still linked to Los Blancos, who hold 60% of his rights and a €8 million buyback option, the club no longer sees him as a top priority for the left-back role.
Carlo Ancelotti has never been particularly enthusiastic about bringing Gutierrez back, and the club has largely viewed the player as a financial asset rather than a genuine first-team option.
The idea throughout the season has been to allow Girona to develop the player further and eventually sell him to a third club, with Madrid benefiting from a substantial cut of the profits.

When Gutierrez left Real Madrid in 2022, the deal included a modest transfer fee of around €4–5 million, along with a clause allowing Madrid to repurchase him for just €8 million. That buyback option becomes active in July.
For any other club, however, Gutierrez’s release clause is five times higher. If an external club moves for him, Madrid will be informed and can either activate their buyback or collect half of the release clause value.
Despite this favourable arrangement, Gutierrez is no longer seen as the primary candidate for the left-back slot. Alvaro Carreras of Benfica has overtaken him in Madrid’s plans.
The Spanish giants are now working on a clever plan involving Manchester United, his former club, to sidestep Benfica’s €60 million valuation and secure the player at a significantly lower cost.
With Carreras rising in Madrid’s estimation, the chances of Gutierrez returning to the Santiago Bernabeu appear slim.
Unless the club decides to use their buyback for financial purposes, his future likely lies elsewhere, while Carreras could soon be the one donning the iconic white shirt.
