Real Madrid have their eyes on Real Sociedad and Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi for the summer transfer window.

As reported previously, Los Blancos are keen on signing a new midfielder before next season and had narrowed in on the Real Sociedad star as their preferred option.

However, there now appears to be a good chance that the Spanish capital giants will miss out on the signing of the midfielder.

Arsenal in advanced talks

That is because Premier League giants Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

The move will not take place this month but in the summer transfer window later in the year, with the Gunners negotiating the key details with the midfielder’s entourage.

Zubimendi has a release clause worth €60 million in his contract with Real Sociedad which Arsenal plan to activate to sign him in the summer.

Having raided Sociedad for Mikel Merino last year, the north London club are now poised to reunite him with his former midfield partner Zubimendi for next season if everything goes according to plans.

This comes as a serious blow for Real Madrid and their plans to reinforce the midfield department following Toni Kroos’ retireement and concerns over the form of Aurelien Tchouameni.

With Zubimendi likely headed for the Premier League, in particular Arsenal, in the summer, it will be interesting to see who Real Madrid decide to go after to bolster their midfield department.
